Options for Cheap Swimming Pools

By: Glenn Whitehead

Looking for options on cheap swimming pools? If you’ve had your heart set on a new pool to beat the summer heat, but just can’t part with the $ 25,000 to $ 50,000 it would take to have one installed; there are some alternatives available. With a work and creativity; you can easily be swimming in weeks, or even days for $ 500 or less. Now I’m not talking about a resort type pool with cascading waterfalls and a swim up bar, but you will be able to take a relaxing dip. You can always upgrade in a year or two when the economy rebounds. Take a look at all of the options and see if one fits your needs.

  • Above Ground Pools-This is probably the most readily available option. Available in hard and soft side; you can find some attractive, durable, and cheap swimming pools starting at around $ 4,000. You can save more by doing the install yourself or spend a couple hundred dollars and let the dealer do it. Do some extensive shopping and price comparisons before buying because prices can vary greatly on the same or similar products.
  • Portable Pools-This is just a lower price version of above ground. These may be inflatable or have braced sides and can be easily assembled and taken down for moving or storage. With prices starting as low as $ 200 you really can’t beat the price. Some of the better ones come with small filters for extended use. The big drawback is, due to being made with cheaper materials, they won’t last forever. But with proper care and storage, you could get 2 or 3 summers out of one and; they’re cheap!
  • IngroundSwimming Pool Kits-This is going to involve a lot more work on your part, but you’re going to get a much more attractive and higher quality pool. There are many different brands and manufacturers; but, for the most part, the kits will come with steel or polymer braces and floor and wall panels, a pump and filter, and a vinyl liner. You must then, dig a hole large enough for the pool and the bracing, assemble the pool in the hole, and back fill around it. As I said it’s a big job, but the results can be worth it. Check carefully to see what’s included with the kit before buying. Some merchants offer ridiculously low prices, the hit you with extra charges for basic things like the liner or filter. Complete kits are available starting at around $ 5,000.
  • Used Pools-Don’t laugh; yes, you can buy a used swimming pool. Search the classified adds in your local papers and online. While preparing to write this article, I did searches on Ebay and Craigslist and found several, with prices starting at Free and going up to
$ 500. These will be above ground and portable pools that people are either no longer using or that may have quit working and they just want to get rid of them. Just check it out good to be sure what you’re getting. Some people may just be looking for a free trash hauling service. But, even if they’re not working or have some damage; installation/repair instructions and replacement parts can probably be found online. As I said, most people just want these pools gone; so drive a hard bargain.
